Covered Bridge in Autumn

Most of the covered bridges I’ve photographed were photographed during the winter months.  I thought it might be nice to try to get one in the fall, so a few weeks ago I took a drive to visit this one.  I would have liked to have gotten more color in hills of the background, but it was a beautiful bright sunny day and it was midday when I visited, so that wasn’t happening.

I am now actually reading an article on dealing with midday light.  We’ll see if it proves helpful!

Speaking of reading…

Sometime earlier this year, I found a wonderful “mini book” written by Tom Dinning.  Titled “Learning to See,” it is Mr. Dinning’s journey in photography from 1947-2012.   In it, he makes such a wonderful connection between photography and life.  Written in 9 short essays, it really is a heartfelt and enjoyable read, and I find myself going back to it from time to time just to read a passage or two from it.  It is in PDF format, free, and available for reading/download here.

Thank you for being here!  Wishing you a wonderful day.

  • I am so jealous of your photos Lisa, wish I could make them as beautiful as you can, hahahah… I need to be so patient with processing which I do so hurriedly and even when shooting I don’t think and plan how to shoot that much. :( (

  • Great shot, I love the colours and tones. Thank you for the pdf link too, sounds like an interesting read.

  • Hi, Lisa! I love the covered bridge! Such texture! And, all the shades of autumn colour around it, only more muted at this time of year. It’s lovely! And, I will definitely read the book you recommend. Sounds right up my alley. Hope you’re well. (And, I hope my comments on your earlier photographs have been showing up…I’ve been responding via iPhone and learned that somethings haven’t been sent as I thought they had. Ahhh, still learning! :) Take care, Lisa!

  • Admired your beautiful shot first, then read your post – got as far as your mention of Tom Dinning’s book; downloaded it and promptly got lost. Only came back after reading the first 4 parts ;>)

Then went on to your post about your peonies (mine looked nothing like that when they were spent !). Both before and after shots are a lovely reminder of the beauty of the seasons.

    Now back to Tom …

  • Even in this light, it is a fantastic photograph of this bridge.
Only, since we are (unfortunately) all perfectionists, please write your experience according to the book!

  • I love this Lisa! Yes, midday light is not the ideal light but occasionally it will work well. You did a good job!

  • Thanks for the link, that book sounds very good…I love your shot and the processing too, it lends itself to the olden times feel of the bridge really well :)

  • Hi Lisa, how interesting you like photographing covered bridges, so unique. You did catch some color on the hills–it’s soft and muted and I like it! I like the shadows of the railing, too, leading up to the bridge, nice perspective. You surely have “learned to see.” :) Thanks for the tip on the mini-book, I’ll check it out. xx

  • So special bridge. Beautiful composed and photographed. Autumn is beautiful.
So funny it is when one gets good books that one can enjoy and learn something too.
Wish you a nice photo weekend.

  • it’s just beautiful lisa, i wish there were some in this area!!

  • Your capture of the covered bridge looks like a painting and a little unreal – like something that has just appeared from nowhere like an image from the past. I like the muted shades. I like the perspective and the turning barrier which engages the eye.

  • Hi, Lisa. This covered bridge photo is the most beautiful among I had ever seen before.
I wish you have a wonderful weekend.

  • I was on one of my drives with my mother today and I had this feeling that you hadn’t posted in awhile…either on your blog or on FB! When I scrolled down my list of favorite blogs in my sidebar, I was happy to see this post! I might have told you previously that I LOVE covered bridges, particularly since discovering that Oregon has more of them than another other state west of the Mississippi (I think!). Two consecutive summers, I was fortunate enough to walk on and photograph several in the Willamette Valley. This is such a beautiful image! (Thanks for the link to the e-book, too.)

  • Beautiful covered bridge, I love the soft focus, love the shadow here too.

  • I love covered bridges and this one is wonderful. I love the texture of the old wood. I also like your pov and how you captured the curve of the road. Beautiful!

  • Such a pretty scene. I clicked on and skimmed through the ebook. Thanks for sharing it.

    November 7, 2012
  • it is beautiful. I always wanted to see one. But that will probaly not happen. I also wonder why people actually built them. To keep the bridge free from snow?

    November 7, 2012
  • It just looks so dreamy and fairy like. Happy Wednesday!

    November 7, 2012
  • I love the ethereal look you gave to this bridge and the surroundings. it’s really a dreamy photo. thaks for the tip on the book. I’ve already saved it on my laptop. xxo

  • Beautiful Lisa! A couple of years ago my friend and I took a ride up to Vermont to seek out covered bridges. The tourist maps point them out! There is something so charming about them.

If you find out a secret to photographing in mid daylight, please share! It drives me crazy when I try to take a photograph of something vibrant in the daytime and the photo just does not do it justice.

    November 7, 2012
    • I will definitely do that, Val!

      November 8, 2012
  • This is beautiful the way it is, Lisa, but I would love to read that article on shooting in midday you mentioned. Any chance you could point us to it? I’m downloading the book you mentioned right now!

    November 7, 2012
    • Barbara, it is part reading, part video, and it is on Kelby Training (subscription). Once I’ve had the opportunity to try some of the things being suggested, I will share them here!

  • What a beautiful photo. Your editing on this is wonderful. I love the soft glow..

    Hugs~

  • Love the leading lines and the soft focus, Lisa!

What article are you reading about shooting in midday light? Before I bought my DSLR last year, I had no idea that midday light is bad. It’s just the easiest time for me to go out. But now I look at my older photos and realize that the light was too harsh, so I need to learn how to take better pictures in midday, too!

    • Elaine, It is part reading, part video, and it is on Kelby Training (subscription).

  • Oh, my. Now that’s a shot worthy of everyone’s praise. Just spectacular.

  • We don’t have this type of bridge here. I would love to walk through this one. The closest I get to a covered bridge is in the film Bridges of Maddison County which is still my favourite film! thanks for the link to the book

    November 7, 2012
  • Hi Lisa,
No covered bridges in my neck-of-the-woods. What interesting subject matter and you are brave shooting in mid-day light! I tend to go in tight w/ that type of light/time of day, if I find myself out in it.
Thanks for sharing Tom Dinning w/ us. His work is amazing, artful, wonderful “seeing”…. A true artist.
    Happy day to you,
    xo A

  • Betty

Just lovely. In film, I was taught to go with sunny 16 or its equivalents and the images would be perfect. Haven’t checked to see if it works w/digital, because I like to shoot w/a wide aperture.

  • a beautiful bridge. lots of textures. i like those diamond windows.

    November 7, 2012
  • well it looks really nice to me, even if the tree color and lighting wasn’t what you wanted. It has a real Orton Effect.

  • Your covered bridge series is one of my favorites. The angle on this one is so pleasing. Thank you very much for the link to the mini book!

    November 7, 2012
  • We don’t have beautiful bridges like this around here, it’s a pity, I’d love to photopgraph them along the year.
I love the Sunny f/16 rule, please let me know if you learn another one!
Have a nice day Lisa! ;-)

    November 7, 2012
  • That is stunning. You know, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a covered bridge of this sort in real life, only in movies and photos and I’m originally from the midwest but I just don’t remember seeing one. We don’t have any like this in AZ that I’ve ever seen. They’re beautiful!

    November 7, 2012
  • Love your covered bridge photography! Hope you share your thoughts/findings regarding midday photography.
